The Anniston Housing Authority 15 & Under Basketball Team competed in the Alabama Public Housing Basketball State Championships, March 18-21, in Dothan. The team went 5-0 to win the championship.

The 10U Heat from South Highland went undefeated through their seven regular season games. They then went on to defeat their three opponents in the District 4 tournament held at the Gadsden Civic Center on Feb. 25.

Anniston head coach Brett Thomas knew his team had to adjust to the pressure the Oxford Yellow Jackets were putting on them.

The Bulldogs switched from a 1-3-1 defense to a 1-2-2 in the second half in which the Yellow Jackets couldn’t recover as Anniston claimed a 78-51 win in the Class 4A-5A Calhoun County Junior High Tournament.

Jacksonville PARD: Scarlet Holds off Black for 26-22 win

The 12-and-Under Scarlet team, coached by Preston Buchanon, held off a fourth quarter rally by Mike Rollins Black team to win 26-22. Scarlet also won their next game over White, 33-20, to take first place in the 12-and-Under Division.

Savannah Gardner, 11, is driven and competitive. She practices basketball twice a week in Birmingham and, on Tuesdays, goes directly to swim practice from the gym.

In her first year playing basketball, the Alexandria High School sixth-grader has played on two teams and will go to Junior Varsity Nationals in March.

And she will play the game in a wheelchair, because this tiny 4 1/2-foot athlete has Cerebral Palsy.

The action is not as fast-paced as it will be in a few years when the kids have a little more experience.

The rules aren’t always followed to the letter and occasionally the ref has to stop the game and tie a child’s shoe.

But at the end of the game, the stands erupt in applause. Fans who cheered for opposite teams a few minutes earlier unite in their appreciation for the kids now running happily off the court.

In 8 and Under action, Kelly, coached by Dan Baer, jumped out to a 16-4 halftime lead over Anthony Kingston’s Scarlet, and despite a great comeback by Scarlet scoring 29 points in the skills quarter, Kelly held on for a 47-40 win.

Through a cloud of smoke, each player races across the basketball court after his name is announced over the PA. Clad in purple and yellow uniforms, the team hovers around the coach for last-minute strategy tips for the game. Cheerleaders jump up and down with pom-poms flying and pump up the crowd with encouraging cheers. The air is filled with anticipation and excitement for the game.

But it’s no ordinary game: this one declares every child a winner.

It is Upward Basketball.
