Anniston Starz place 2nd at state
The Anniston Therapeutic Recreation Department’s Special Olympics basketball team placed second in Division II at the state basketball tournament, held in Tuscaloosa on March 10.
The Starz were 6-2 during the regular season, beating teams from Talladega (HKS), Homewood (Exceptional Foundation) and Tuscaloosa (ParaTroopers).
Even though The Starz beat Tuscaloosa both times during regular season, they lost the lead and the championship game by the final score of 26-21.
Most of the team has been together for at least 10 years, and the oldest player is 62 years old.
Coach Bernadette Mack said, “Every time they hit the court, practice or game, they play with good sportsmanship, a good attitude and heart.”
Mack believes they are a good group of players. “We are very proud of them. It’s a pleasure to be able to coach and work with them,” she said.
