Double your cycling fun

Special to Score!
It is said that in spring thoughts turn to love. For athletes, this love often includes two wheels, handlebars, sore rear ends, helmets and speed.
Whether you are a novice cyclist, seasoned rider or have never had an interest in bicycles, mark your calendar for back-to-back events on May 6-7, selected as “Top Ten Events” by the State of Alabama Department of Tourism and Travel.
On Saturday, May 6, the Sunny King Criterium in downtown Anniston is listed on USA Cycling’s National Racing Calendar for 2006. Local amateurs, as well as national teams, will compete for more than $14,000, as spectators chow down at the Red Diamond Restaurant Tour, consisting of more than 25 restaurants set up in a pedestrian mall in the heart of downtown Anniston.
There will also be live music, an artist market and a wide variety of kid-related activities. Proceeds to go to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
Get plenty of rest, then double your fun and join in on the activities on Sunday, May 7, for the Cheaha Challenge Century in scenic Piedmont.
Touted as “the toughest ride in the South,” the 102-mile course boasts more than 7,400 feet of climbing and grades as steep as 15 percent.
Besides the challenging course and the breathtaking views from Mount Cheaha, the highest point in Alabama, what makes this roller-coaster trip worth it? The massive amount of experienced support lining the entire course – one smiling, helpful volunteer for every two riders, various ride options and it benefits efforts to complete the Chief Ladiga rail trail running from Anniston to the Georgia state line.
Registration for both events closes 30 minutes prior to the start.
